2001: A Colorful Odyssey
"The colors children, the colors!!! Mahaa, flavin!!!" - Prof. Frink. The colors indeed. 2001: A Space Odyssey certainly had colors. In fact, there is a 20 minute session of colors. All types of colors, red, green, blue, yellow, heck, even black. No color was spared in this all out insane scene!!! Dave is seen flying throught the colors. His eyes blink, the colors are reflected in them. His view fromt he cockpit of his ship shows a plethora of colors as he speeds through them, not unlike hyperspace as seen in Star Wars. No color scheme was repeated, Kubrik wanted 20 minutes of nonstop crazy colorful images!!! Did he capture the attention of his viewers? One must concede it at least makes one think what Kubrik intended, or whether he smoked some bad marajuana.
My guess is that Kubrik must have been smoking something. This was made back in the 60's, free love, drugs and what-not. But he must have some reason for putting a 20 minute segment of colors. I highly doubt he would wast 20 minutes of film with no meaning. There must be some ulterior reasoning for placing this in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Regardless, I believe the scene was marajuana induced. From there, Kubrik found some meaning to put in for the colors. The length of the scene and the colors may represent the vastness of space and all of its greatness. Then again, you may just need to have smoked a joint to understand the meaning behind Kubrik's 20 minute color scene.
