America The Beautiful

On September 11, 2001 at approximetely 8:45 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, The World Trade Center was struck by a comercial airliner on it's way to Los Angeles from Boston. So began the terror that has unfolded upon not only New York, Pennsilvania, and Washington D.C., but all of America. As the valiant Firefighters, Policemen and Amublence, teams rushed up the stairs of the World Trade Center, it was suddenly brought down on them. An estimated 300 or more of these brave heroes died doing what they do best, trying to save lives. This is the defining spirit of America. We are a people that will risk life and limb to save another human being. On a sunny Tuesday morning, this heroic spirit was put to the test, and America has passed.

America passed the test of unity in so many ways, it makes one wonder why terrorists could ever believe this tragedy would tear America apart. They imagined a country of different races, ethnicities, and religions blaming one another for a horrendous crime none of us commited. They imagined riots, death, seething hatred for one another. Yet none of this occured. Rather, we became a nation seperated not by race, religion or ethnicity. We instead became one solidified nation, never before seen with such unity. On Friday after the event, Americans all over the country obsevrved a moment of silence by stepping out of their houses or cars and lighting a candle in rememberance of those that died. Radio stations were heard playing America the Beautiful and God Bless America. Even comedian and talk show host, David Letterman was in a somber mood on his first show since the tragedy had occured. There is not a person in this country that has not in some way been affected by this tragic turn of events.

Some of us have been affected more profoundly than others. Many have lost loved ones, friends, and leaders. The area around the wreckage in downtown Manhatten was strewn with photos of those missing posted by loved ones hoping that a passerby may have some information. Others, unfortunately, had the unbearable task of confirming the death of their loved ones. Strangers were seen hugging and consoling one another. Rescue Workers gave it thier all, working non-stop, searching for any survivor. As the days wore on, chances of finding a survivor dwindled, yet the rescue workers and families of missing persons never gave up hope. Even those aboard the flight that crashed in Pennsilvania saved lives. Through the use of cell phones, passengers learned of the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center. A group of them decided to overpower the hijackers and crash the plane away from a large population. Our President has held us together and has given us hope in this time of crisis. It is now time to look up to our elected leaders, George W. Bush and our congress.

As our nation digs itself out of this horrid atrocity, we must stand united. Only as one, can wee eliminate terrorism in all of its evil. We must not single citizens out because of their ethnicity or skin color. We must trust in our leaders to do the right thing in bringing the terrorists and their affiliates to justice. Most of all, we must never forget what has happened. We must never forget those that died in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsilvania. Nor shall we forget the firefighters and police officers that gave their lives to save others. Think not of this as a horrible tragedy, but an oppurtunity to show what America is made of and to rid this world of terrorism so this tragic event will never again have the oppurtunity to occur.
